Fish Curry Recipe varies over the region and there are a lots of varieties based on the ingredients we add. Here I share a easy one pot fish curry recipe which I generally made with the small anchovy fish. But we make the fish curry with any type of fish.

In this fish curry I add only fish but we may sometimes include vegetables like raw mangoes, drumsticks or with egg plant. If we add vegetables, we add vegetables and let it cook 60% and then we add our fish so that both cooks at the same time.

Fish Curry Recipe

In this fish curry recipe, I use both onion and shallots, tomato and spice powders. If we grind spice paste with raw ingredients, it is most welcome. Because it surely improves the taste of the curry. To make the process of preparation easy, I generally use readymade spice powders.

The taste of the fish curry depends on the right ratio of tamarind and spices. So, if we made this correct, then this curry will be delicious for sure. My grand mother first make tamarind water and mix spice powders and salt to this tamarind water. Mix everything and taste it for right ratio.

Right ratio means, no one single ingredient dominates. That is, you do not get more tanginess or more spicy in the mixture. Both tamarind and spice mix together to give a good taste.

Anchovy Fish Curry

A simple seasoning with Thalippu Vadagam gives the curry a unique flavor. But otherwise, we make a simple seasoning with few fenugreek seeds and fennel seeds.

Anchovy fish fries are famous but I prefer a healthier recipe made out of this nutritious fish. That is, with less oil. So, I prefer making curry over crispy or oily fries. This simple fish curry is made with few ingredients and tastes yummy.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  1. Anchovy – I made this fish curry with anchovy fish. This may be prepared with any kind of fish.
  2. Onion and Shallots – I used one small onion and few shallots. But we use only shallots or only onion.
  3. Tomato – Instead of using only tamarind, one small tomato will balance the taste of the curry.
  4. Chili Powder – Use chili powder for spiciness. We may use chili powder and pepper powder also.
  5. Coriander Powder – Coriander powder will give a nice thick consistency to the curry and also balances the spiciness.
  6. Salt – Salt is used for seasoning.
  7. Garlic – Garlic when sautéed with onion will give a nice aroma and taste. But this is purely optional.
