Mutton Curry Recipe
Saute all ingredients step by step and finally add cleaned mutton. As we cook mutton in pressure cooker it cooks well and soft. Finally, we add a coconut paste and boil all together to combine well. Tada! our tasty authentic mutton curry is now ready to enjoy.
Ingredients
- Mutton – 1/4 Kgs
- Onion – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Salt – ½ teaspoon
- Ginger & Garlic Paste – 1 teaspoon
- Pepper -½ teaspoon
- Jeera/ Cumin Seeds – ½ teaspoon
- Fennel Seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
- Chili powder – 1 ½ teaspoons
- Coriander powder – 3 teaspoons
- Grated Coconut – ¼ cup
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
How to make Mutton Curry?
In a pressure cooker add cooking oil and heat. Now add Whole garam masalas and fry for a second.
Then add, chopped onions & curry leaves and saute till light golden brown. Then add ginger-garlic paste and saute for 1 minute.
Then add chopped tomatoes and saute till it softens.
Now add chili powder, coriander powder, chettinadu mutton masala & turmeric powder and saute for 1 minute. You may adjust the spiciness according to your taste. Now add our cleaned mutton pieces. Saute for 2 minutes. Finally, add salt and required quantity (not too much) of hot water.
When it starts boiling close the pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles if your mutton is tender or else cook for 5 to 6 whistles.
In the mean time, grind grated coconut, fennel seeds, pepper & jeera to a fine paste. Keep this aside.
After the pressure released itself, put the pressure cooker on stove in medium flame. Let the curry boils well. Finally, add coconut paste and mix well. Let the curry boils till the raw flavors goes.
Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves. Enjoy your mutton curry with hot rice, idli, dosa or with soft uttapam.
How to Cook Mutton?
As mutton takes time to cook well and so cook enough number of whistles. Tender ones cook in just 3 to 4 whistles but meat of matured ones take 5 to 6 whistles. So cook the mutton accordingly.
How to find the mutton is tender or not?
Experience persons will identify it by seeing the mutton itself. But beginners could not. So follow the tricks here. Take a piece of mutton and cut it with a knife into two pieces. If it is easy then the mutton is tender otherwise not.
Second trick is, just smell the steam while the cooker whistles. If the mutton cooked well it smells like mutton curry. If not the steam smells like raw mutton not like mutton curry.

Close the pressure cooker and cook till the mutton is done.
In the meanwhile, grind grated coconut, pepper, jeera & fennel seeds into a fine paste.
After the pressure gets released itself, open the pressure cooker and put on flame.
Now add coconut paste and mix well. Let the curry boils for 5 minutes so that all raw flavors vanish.
Finally, add curry leaves and coriander leaves to enhance the taste. Serve hot with rice, idli, dosa or with uttappam.
