Uppudu Breakfast Balls are a special south Indian Breakfast or snack. These balls are prepared from a spicy mixture called upma or uppudu. This Uppudu is made with very less oil and again steamed to soft texture. It is a healthy but interesting breakfast or snack option.

Adding vegetables to the uppudu base, these uppudu balls become more healthier. Also, our Uppudu Breakfast Balls are prepared in just 20 minutes and no pre-preparation needed.

Uppudu Breakfast Balls or Upma Kozhukattai is one of our favourite and healthy snack recipes. Everybody will like to have this spicy, tasty, flavourful snack accompanied with a tea even though they are not uppudu/ upma lovers. This may also be a good alternative for our usual idli, dosa, pongal etc.

Uppudu Breakfast Balls

Base Uppudu/ Upma be made from the coarse rava of any grain of our choice like white rice, brown rice, black rice, millets, broken wheat or corn. With a simple seasoning and flavored up with grated coconut, this uppudu balls are an easy to make quick breakfast or snack.

We prepare the uppudu base and keep it in refrigerator and at the evening we may prepare this uppudu balls. No accompaniment is needed. We may serve with tomato/ chilly sauce if we wish.

Uppudu Breakfast Balls or Upma Kozhukattai is sometimes a left over food recipe. Yes! If we prepare Uppudu/ Upma for breakfast then this Upma kozhukattai is the snack made from our left-over upma.

If we wish to add protein to the breakfast balls, we may add lentils.

Ingredients

  1. Broken Wheat – Broken Wheat is the main ingredient. This could be replaced with any variety of rice or millet grounded to a coarse powder.
  2. Toor Dal – Toor dal is added to enhance the taste. we may replace with other dals also.
  3. Coconut – Grated coconut will give a nice taste and texture to the recipe.
  4. Coconut oil – Coconut oil is used for seasoning and also enhances the flavor of the dish.
  5. Water – Water is added to cook the grain.
  6. Mustard Seeds – Added for seasoning.
  7. Urad Dal – Added for giving a nice crunchy bites.
  8. Red chilies – Red chilies are added for spiciness and also for flavor.
  9. Asafetida – Added to enhance the flavor.

How to make Uppudu Breakfast Balls?

Pre-Preparation

Soak Toor dal for about 15 minutes and ground to a coarse paste. Keep it aside.

Preparing Uppudu

Heat oil in a pan. Once it becomes hot add mustard seeds, broken red chilies. After it splutters add urad/ channa dal. When dal starts changing its color, add Currey leaves and asafetida.

Add 3 cup water and bring it to boil. Now add Toor dal paste and mix well. Then add grated coconut and broken wheat. Give them a good mix. Cover the pan with lid and cook for 10 minutes in low flame.

Turn off the stove and let it cool for 15 minutes.

Preparing Uppudu Breakfast Balls

Boil water in an idli pot. Grease oil in idli plates. Make small rolls/ kozhukattais/ balls (make tight) from the uppudu/upma mix we just made. Steam it in the idli pot or in idli cooker for 7 to 10 minutes. Take the idli plate from steam and let it cool for 5 minutes. Now transfer the rolls/ kozhukattais to the serving plate.You may serve it with any chutney or only the kozhukattai/ roll.

Tips

1. Adding coconut oil will give a nice flavor so don’t skip it.
2. Adding toor dal and grated coconut will enhance the taste of the kozhukattai/ roll.
3. Don’t add too much oil otherwise you couldn’t make kozhukattai/ roll; it will break.
4. Take curry leaves and red chili pieces from upma before making kozhukattai/ roll; Otherwise it will break while steaming. But don’t skip adding curry leaves and red chilies while making upma because the mouth watering flavor of the kozhukattai/ roll will be given by these ingredients.
5. Transfer kozhukattai/ roll from idli plate 2 minutes after it had been taken out from steam.

  1. Soak Toor dal till soft and ground to a coarse paste. Keep it aside.

  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and broken red chilies. After the mustard starts spluttering, add urad dal and fry till it starts changing color. Then add curry leaves, grated coconut and asafetida. Mix well.

    Do the whole process of seasoning in a low flame to avoid burning.
  3. Now add water and bring it to boil. Now add salt and ground Toor dal paste. Give them a good mix. Please ensure there are no lumps.

  4. Then add broken wheat while stirring continuously. Cover with a lid and Cook the uppudu in low flame for 7 minutes. Then take out from flame and let the uppudu cools completely.

  5. Make balls/ kozhukattai/ roll from this uppudu/ upma we just made. Steam this balls/ kozhukattai/ rolls in idli pot or steamer for 10 minutes. Our Uppudu Breakfast Balls are ready to enjoy.
