Urad Dal Kheer
Since Urad dal is our desi dal, we know lot of recipes using it and this is one of easy-tasty recipe among them.
Pressure cook dry roasted urad dal to mushy stage and add coconut milk, sugar (or jaggery) with elaichi powder and grated nuts. This is a healthy & easier version of urad dal kanji/ Kheer.
Ingredients
- Urad dal – 1 cup
- Water – 2 to 3 cups
- Sugar – ½ cup (as per your taste)
- Salt – ¼ teaspoon
- Coconut Milk – ½ cup (optional)
- Grated Cashews, Badams, cucumber seeds (optional)
- Elaichi powder – a pinch
How to make Urad Dal Kheer?
Dry roast urad dal to a nice golden color and aroma.

Pressure cook this roasted urad dal to 4 to 5 whistles in a medium flame. Let it cool.
Now, mesh this cooked dal or grind it in whipper mode for 1 minutes. If you like crunchy bite of cooked dal then you grind it coarsely otherwise grind it to a smooth consistency.
Add jaggery, coconut milk (if you wish a rich kheer) and water to adjust consistency and taste. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the taste.
Now add elaichi powder and grated nuts. Enjoy your most healthy kheer.
Common Mistakes
- Roast urad dal in medium to low flame otherwise it will get burnt.
- Dry roast dal to a nice golden color otherwise the raw flavor of dal will ruin the uniqueness of the Kheer/ Kangi.
- Add jaggery as per your taste not too much.
- Don’t keep it outside for longer period of time after mixing coconut milk otherwise it will get curdled. If you want to keep for a longer time add coconut milk at the time of serving if you want to add it.
